Gary Sutton obtained a BSc in Geology from the University of British Columbia in 1987. In 1999, he completed an MBA program specializing in technology management. During his mining career, he spent four years as a field geologist on numerous exploration properties in western North America. He then began specializing in 3-D modelling and geostatistics, and became responsible for declaring mineral reserves at mining operations. During this time, he spent five years at the San Manuel in situ copper leaching operation which was at the forefront of implementing in situ leaching in hard rock mining.
Sutton now manages an equipment manufacturing company. He also consults on the in situ leaching process worldwide and enjoys promoting the benefits of this type of mining process.
