On the recommendation of the CIM Public Affairs Committee, CIM Council at its fall meeting in 1984, approved and established a fund to sponsor two (2) Media Awards to be known as the CIM/NRCan Journalism Awards, being sponsored jointly by CIM and Natural Resources Canada. These Awards consist of a handsome marble desk plaque bearing the CIM Medal and a mounted gold-bearing ore specimen with a customized framed scroll for the winner and an "Honourable Mention" scroll going to other deserving entries, as well as a scroll being presented to the newspaper, magazine, etc., in which the winning articles were published or broadcast. In 2001 a new category was added to include students attending a journalism school in Canada.
