Highlights

Medal for Meritorious Contributions to Mining - Jack Zhang, Associate Vice-President of Strategic Technology at Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) and adjunct professor at University of Saskatchewan.

Jack Zhang has led the development and commercialization of several critical mineral separation and refining technologies from their conceptual stages to full implementation.

“Receiving the Metal of Meritorious Contributions to Mining fills me with profound humility. This honor reflects not merely my individual effort, but rather the long-standing collaborations and the collective wisdom of our CIM colleagues driving innovation. It stands as testament to our shared pursuit of sustainable mineral development and technological excellence in the CIM community. The recognition inspires us to push the boundaries in metallurgical science and technology while maintaining our industry’s global leadership.” - Jack Zhang

Selwyn Blaylock Canadian Mining Excellence Award – Roussos Dimitrakopoulos, professor in the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill University.

Roussos Dimitrakopoulos works on geostatistical simulation and stochastic optimization as well as artificial intelligence applications in mine planning and production scheduling.

“Receiving the CIM Selwyn Blaylock Canadian Mining Excellence Award recognizes the contribution of simultaneous stochastic optimization of mining complexes and inspires the next generations of mining professionals to develop new technologies advancing the sustainable development of mineral resources.” - Roussos Dimitrakopoulos

CIM Distinguished Service Medal – Richard Arnold McIvor, president of McIvor Engineering and Maintenance Services Inc.

Dick McIvor has been providing specialized mine hoisting plant services to the mining industry for the past 25 years. He was selected as a CIM Distinguished Lecturer in 1992, awarded the McParland Memorial Medal in 1994 and was awarded a CIM Fellowship in 1998. He was the CIM MERS chairman in 1995-96 and currently serves as treasurer for the society.

“As I approach the end of my working career, receiving the CIM Distinguished Service Medal is a humbling and deeply meaningful recognition. I’ve had the privilege to work with a lot of great people at CIM and the mining industry over many years, solving challenges and innovating for the betterment of our industry. This award reflects the collective efforts of many, and it is an honour to have contributed to the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of mining operations. I am grateful for the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the mining industry and CIM.” - Dick McIvor

CIM has had a long tradition of honouring those who have made exceptional contributions in various fields related to this industry. Their dedication has always made—and continues to make—Canada's mining industry a unique influencer in the global minerals, metals and energy landscape.

The CIM Awards are presented at the Awards Gala sponsored by Caterpillar and its Canadian dealers, on Monday, May 5, 2025, during the CIM CONNECT Convention + Expo at the Montréal Convention Centre.
