The 57th annual Canadian Mineral Processors Conference attracted 665 delegates to Ottawa, January 20 to 23
Hosted by CIM’s Canadian Mineral Processors Society (CMP), the annual conference’s technical program featured 33 papers organized under the themes of flotation/ beneficiation; flowsheets and equipment design; operations, projects and startups; and comminution and ore sorting.
This year’s event was preceded by the one-day Laplante-Laskowski Symposium on Mineral Processing Fundamentals, which was hosted by the Minerals Science and Engineering section of CIM’s Metallurgy and Materials Society (MetSoc).
The symposium featured 11 presentations focused on academic developments and attracted 115 attendees.
Outgoing CMP chair Kim-Quyen Nguyen said the symposium “offered attendees an opportunity to explore specialized topics in greater depth. It also provided additional networking opportunities, enabling participants to establish connections and engage in dialogue ahead of the main CMP event. Furthermore, it attracted additional attendees to CMP, particularly students.” Nguyen said the 93 students who attended the CMP Conference was also a new record for the event.
McGill University professor and CIM Fellow James Finch opened the CMP proceedings with his plenary “Cells, Banks and Circuits.”
The technical program concluded with a panel discussion, featuring Dominique Lascelles, Manqiu Xu and Paul Staples, to address the question “Lab testing: How do we get it right and where do we go wrong?”
While the discussion ranged widely from the specifics of lab testing to the enduring challenges of meeting investor expectations, panel moderator Keith Merriam summarized the conversation well in his conclusion: “Be thoughtful, plan ahead, watch out for errors, know who your audience is.”
The proceedings of both events will be available through the CIM.org bookstore.
